The amount of plugins, effects and transitions I've paid for over the years, I could probably have purchased Apple Motion about 10 times over. MONEY has been spent on things that can easily be done in Apple Motion. Why it's not the other way round, I'll never know but I wish I clocked these things when I started. The default Film Grain effect style is set to "iMovie Grain" with an optional dropdown menu to select "Realistic Grain". Other things like the default titles, and effects like "broken TV" also have iMovie written all over them. The main one was the day I realised that the movement automations are set to this thing called Smooth (right click on the start and end points of the movement to change it to Straight) which gave all my wannabe "slick" movements this horrible ease in and out look like a Powerpoint Presentation. It took me a while to realise this, but gradually I clocked on that everything I disliked about Final Cut was because it gave everything an "iMovie" vibe. Final Cut Pro is designed for people migrating over from iMove, and it shows.Nowadays, I either head on over to Motion5 or source footage I can mix with a nifty blending mode to create something high quality and unique. I've spent a lot of money on Pixel film Studios effects and transitions hoping it would transform me into a better editor. The end result has been 100s upon 100s of effects and transitions I barely touch, a lot of them don't offer a great deal of flexibility and are quite poor quality, and it just stalls the workflow. Final Cut Pro can feel a bit lacklustre when it comes to its default effects and I've spent many hours scoping the web for free transitions and effects. Don't hate on this one, I know we all do it. Don't waste money and time scoping for free transitions and effects. This means that if things really go awol, I have at least a series of FCP library data files that I can revert to assuming I haven't lost the raw footage too. Only recently have I also been backing up the Final Cut Pro backups (which you can find in Users>Movies >Final Cut Pro Backups) which are the automatic library data files that Final Cut Pro generates with each Library. Now, I work exclusively on external hard drives with footage + Final Cut Pro libraries also backed up two times over. As mentioned previously, I'd save everything into my internal MacBook hard drive. Keep as much as you can outside your computer system. I wish I knew about this because holy sh** the amount of times I was scratching my head as to why it would take so long to render upon opening Final Cut, or why my hard drive would reach full capacity within a few days. Bob's Music Video (V2), Bob's Music Video (Clean Edit). Duplicate projects will also be saved within its designated Library. I wish I knew that a Library is effectively a new job, and the projects within those libraries more like deliverables. I'd create a "2019" Library with 100's of different projects across 100s of different jobs. When I first began, I did not understand the difference between a Library and a Project. Some of these are really obvious now I look back, but at the time I remember distinctly being really confused by some of the ways Final Cut Pro worked. I'm not saying this is how you should work, it's just things I wish I knew about as a beginner. I think it could be really handy for beginners of final cut pro! I've also wasted a lot of cash because of these mistakes which i'll go into below, but I just wanted to share some of my thoughts and invite anyone else to do the same. A lot of those early years were filled with making mistakes or simply going through a really long winded process to achieve something that could have been done fairly simply. With that in mind, I wanted to compile 5 things I wish I knew about Final Cut Pro when I started. I've been really enjoying this reddit page for sometime as it feels like a friendly place to share advice to new and ongoing final cut pro users. I've been using Final Cut Pro since it became "Final Cut Pro X", as a student through to now as a professional working on adverts for companies like Apple Music and Amazon, music videos for major label artists, digital assets, live visuals for DJs, lyric videos.the list goes on. Hey r/finalcutpro members + final cut pro users passing through.
